Connect!
We've just completed the first month of 2006. A lot has happened in 31 days. Using AP Multimedia Archive, over 69,000 photographs were uploaded in the past month.* In Accuweather, if I type in my zip code, I discover
just how warm the weather was ("DEPARTURE FROM NORM +13.0") and in January, Vol. 37, Issue 1 of American Libraries and Vol. 24, Issue 4 of Library Media Connection were both added to EBSCO, full text! To say we live in an information rich world is an understatement!
Every single month, we have so many opportunities to share with fellow teachers and students strategies on finding and using information. Who did we connect with this month? What opportunities will February bring?
I'd like to encourage us as a profession to use our professional organization, IASL, to connect! Topics will be varied as we work together to grow in our profession, to share how we reach out to staff and students; to discuss our responses to school initiatives - most recently the High School Summit; to plan strategies to advocate for information literacy curriculum in our schools and to use our website to store items we create such as bibliographies and curriculum connections, as well as direct us to more information.
As the President of IASL in 06, I am looking forward to working with the Board and the Membership on all of these issues as well as issues we haven't even thought of yet, but very likely will come up during the days and months of 2006. (And it will all happen very quickly!)
Watch for my "Front Page" notes each month, as well as four electronic journals published in February, May, September and November.
You are welcome to attend board meetings. Scheduled meetings for 2006 are April 1, June 30, and an ICN on October 4. The first meeting for 2006 was held on January 14 where Dale Vandehaar and Jill Hofmockel were recognized for their service.
Our membership meeting will be held at the fall ILA Conference in Council Bluffs, October 13. Much more on calendars in the Feb. newsletter, but add these dates to your calendar: April 21 - ILA/ACRL "High School to College - preparing our students", June 8 - "Subjects Matter - Harvey Daniels in Ottumwa"; and June 14 - Carol Kuhlthau will be in Ankeny.

Math-Literature Curriculum Connection
Most parents and teachers would recognize that Math, Science and Reading are directly connected with their school district goals. What sometimes isn't recognized is that a partner in reaching those goals is the school media specialist or teacher librarian. In the most basic way, librarians are responsible for making sure that the school library collections reflect the curriculum of our schools. In all too many schools, however, purchase decisions are hampered by understaffed libraries or inadequate funding.
Keeping focused on current trends, reading the literature in other content areas including math, science and reading is a critical responsibility. On the IASL website under Resources, I propose that we include bibliographies for our members to use as starting points. Here's my most recent Math - Literature bibliography that I share with K-8 teachers to use as they incorporate literature examples to teach math concepts. (Check out the "Novels in Verse" listing there also.)

Members!
Find out more about our board members and entire membership in the Feb. IASL Journal. All members have been asked to complete an introductory Key Survey. Board members e-mail addresses are listed on the IASL website.
Listservs
Iowans interested in school libraries receive information from several organizations. We will try not to cross-post, but sometimes it happens. Please check the address of your e-mail to understand which group has sent out the message.
iasl@iowalibraryassociation.org is for members of IASL only and will be used as the primary method of communication within this group. Any member of the group may use this.
The new Teacher Librarian listserv from the State Library goes to everyone that completes the State Library Survey. This includes teacher librarians, library associates, school administrators and staff. Postings are usually from the State Library although I will be using this list initially this year to see if others are interested in joining IASL. This is not a discussion listserv.
SLIK-12 has been in operation for several years and is an open, unmoderated list from the University of Northern Iowa. It is open to anyone interested in libraries.
ILA President, Susan Craig, will send out notes to the entire membership of ILA. Please watch for her name in the address.
Other Subdivisions of ILA that frequently send out information include:
Governmental Affairs - The e-mail will be
posted by Duncan Stewart, ILA Governmental Affairs Committee Chair and Federal Relations Coordinator.
Intellectual Freedom - These e-mails will be posted by Michael Wright, Chair of ILA Intellectual Freedom. |

February is Winter Olympics. Here are a couple of ideas on integrating online resources in our schools.
Photographs and Clipart The photographs and clipart used in this publication are from Multimedia Archive, Clipart or the author's personal collection. Pictured below, I am working with Albia students. We are using WebCT to post responses to books read as part of the "Content Reading in the High School" project. We would like to have photos from your libraries as you work with students. Please e-mail them to Becky Mather, Publications Chair. Watch for them in coming journals!
