Reporter's Notebook: Governor Vilsack was introduced by a student from East High on June 1, 2006. Signing HF 2792 put Teacher Librarians back into the Code of Iowa! |
 |
It was a beautiful sunny morning with several gathered to mark this occasion including Dale Vande Haar, Des Moines Public Schools; Judy Jeffrey, Dept. of Education; Mary Wegner, State Library, and Kristin Steingreaber, IASL President, 2006, pictured here with the Governor. |

A team effort to get the job done - thanks to so many!

In the Governor's comments on June 1, he thanked the Legislators including those present - Jo Oldson, Jodi Tymeson and Paul McKinley, as well as representatives from the ISEA, the Dept. of Education, the AEAs, IASB and School Administrators. As I listened for his comments on Teacher Librarians, he linked our work with technology and our important role to work with classroom teachers to make technology accessible for students.
He said, this was a "Red-letter day" and of the many bills he signed, one that he is extremely proud of.
Congratulations to the library community for your work
to help make this a reality!

East High Teacher Librarian, Nancy Butler, a graduate of UNI, shared her library space (a mezzanine above for fiction and the spacious computer area below).

Of historical note is the photograph of Ronald Reagan in the library. It was taken in 1936 on the steps of the East High Building where the signing took place this morning.
