Great opportunity for new teacher librarians!

The University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science
has received an $880,000 grant to train teacher librarians!
Details can be found at the SLIS Web page http://slis.uiowa.edu

IN BRIEF:

  1. The University will recruit two cohorts of 20 students with the first class starting work in the summer of 2008 and the second cohort beginning in the summer of 2009.
  2. Priority will be given to recruiting certified teachers who can assume the teacher librarian job in their district or nearaby districts as they complete certification requirements, and those who commit to remaining in that position for two years. The grant will provide a $15,000 stipend over the two year period to pay tuition, most fees and some travel expenses.
  3. Most course work will be delivered through distance education systems.
  4. Students will be required to attend an on-campus class component at least once each semester.
  5. IASL was named as a partner in the grant and will
  • aid in the identification of teacher librarian mentors
  • assist in identification and recruitment of students
  • sponsor professionl development opportunities
    for cohort members
  • provide opportunities for junior and senior high school students
to explore and consider careers in librarianship

Application deadline is February 1, 2008 for the first group!
